The competitions, dances and colourful celebrations of Indonesia’s 71st Independence Day were captured in this video by Official PWB photographer Brian Hodges and PWB Founder Danielle Da Silva. They captured images of the celebration in the community of Desa Ban in East Bali, a community that can celebrate not only their independence, but recent improvements in health care, education and infrastructure.

The celebrations are held every year by the East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP), an organization that has worked in Bali for twenty years. The inception of EBPP was inspired by a small mountain village that reported, in a survey, an overwhelming desire for education and investment in their future, even as they suffered birth-defects from malnutrition, little or no infrastructure for sanitation, and an absence of water. The perseverance of small rural communities in Bali to enrich themselves in art and their own culture is vibrantly portrayed in these images; glowing in colours and an energetic atmosphere, the performers and audiences are wholeheartedly immersed in the Desa Ban’s celebration of Indonesia’s 71st Independence Day.
