The voices of grassroots or "bottom-up" organizations are more crucial now more than ever in addressing global issues as we see "top-down" approaches failing time and time again. Photography and video are invaluable ways of communicating messages, sharing perspectives, fostering cross-cultural understanding, and inspiring others. That's why PWB partners with and amplifies voices of grassroots organizations worldwide that make a significant impact in areas like healthcare, education, conservation, human rights, sustainability and innovation. We strive to operate with an anti-oppresive, intersectional framework that values ethics and amplifies locally and community-produced, grassroots narratives.
How does the PWB Program work?
At PWB we believe grassroots initiatives deserve more attention as they tend to demonstrate the highest success rates in creating social change due to their organic, local and community-oriented nature. Our storytellers are regularly selected from our applicants through a competitive process. Everyone is reviewed and those selected as official PWB photographers or videographers partake in unique, once-in-a-lifetime volunteer experiences to document the incredible grassroots causes that we champion. Our partner organisations use the images and video for their own educational, communications and storytelling purposes while PWB uses our platform to share these stories with the world through our web series, magazine, blog, website, exhibits, publications, and more).
Photographs and videos from our program go on to be featured in our magazine, exhibits, blog, and various other publications including the Huffington Post, Huffington Post Travel, CBC, Rangefinder, National Geographic, The Economist, SLR Lounge, the UN-HABITAT 2013 Handbook, Guttenberg Press, Alternavox, Photo Life, Hart House Camera Club and many others.
