ABOUT THE CHARITY

Established in 1960, this NGO’s mission is to promote the social inclusion of persons with visual impairments through utilizing and empowering them as well advocating for their rights.

Their main activities include:

  • Pilot projects on digital learning in primary and secondary schools for the Blind in 4 counties; Meru, Mombasa, West Pokot and Kisumu.

  • Training of visually impaired on adaptive technologies and computing

  • Production of Braille and digital books for visually impaired persons

  • Revolving fund to promote economic empowerment for persons with disabilities and the vulnerable

  • Provision of rehabilitation services for the newly blinded

  • Sports for the Blind

PROJECT DETAILS

The focus of this project will be documenting this NGO”s work based in several project sites, in particular their schools for the blind in Kimabu County, Meru County, Mombasa County, Mwingi Kitui County, and Nairobi County. The Associate will meet with the NGO’s Management and their Chief Executive Officer for the purpose of interviews. He/she will also travel to Coastal Beach Counties to visit the NGO’s projects (500 kms drive from Nairobi City).

Materials will be used to showcase the organization’s work and its impact on daily lives of visually impaired persons; and to mobilize resources and efforts by the larger public to support the course of empowering visually impaired persons.

QUALIFICATIONS

 Desirable

  • Experience in overseas development

  • Experience traveling abroad in developing nations

Essential

  • Storytelling - Must submit a minimum of one (1) original article, 800-1000 words upon completion of the project, to complement the images/footage of this assignment.

  • Proficient in photo-documentary/photojournalism

    Experience using editing software (Photoshop, InDesign)

  • Experience working with persons with disabilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills

  • Adaptable to new and different situations, flexible and patient

  • Respect to cultural sensitivity
