assignment DETAILS

After arriving at the airport, you will travel to the community partner’s base, within the city of Kampala. Throughout your stay, you will be hosted in a private room at a local hostel. Kampala is Uganda’s largest city and economic hub. The city is surrounded by mountains and close to Africa’s largest lake. However, the growing population and economic disparity have resulted in an almost equal makeup up of both skyscrapers and slums.

During the assignment, you will be documenting several project sites, including tennis lessons, reading clubs, and health seminars on issues such as personal hygiene, sexual health and HIV awareness and education. HIV/Aids remains a major health concern for people in Kampala. The community partner uses sport and games as a way to educate young people on the pandemic, promote behavioural change and enhance life skills that would help them as they face challenges that come with the pandemic.

You will also be invited to visit local churches and primary schools. As well, you will have the opportunity to visit nearby lake Victoria, and the small town of Jinja, where you can explore the Nile River.

You will be responsible for:

- Capturing the natural surroundings and villages of the community members

- Photographing students of the tennis lessons, sexual health classes, and reading groups, including candid moments between students and staff

- Portraits of the community partner’s staff and volunteers, and candid moments at work

- Creating a warm and safe environment for the students as they are being photographed

your impact

Your images have the potential to assist the community partner in attracting new donors, helping to sustain their projects and inspire new opportunities for growth. The community partner hopes to increase social media engagement and produce new print materials. With the help of your captivating images, the community partner can convey to donors and social media users the value of their support. Your images should tell a story that highlights the experiences of local students and the community partner’s mission to promote health and well-being.
