While it doesn't get a lot of attention, Uzbekistan is a life-changing destination for all who are smart enough to visit. These ten days will take you through some of the greatest cultural highlights the country has to offer. Marvel at the gorgeous mosques in Samarkand, experience a one-night stay in a traditional desert yurt, and immerse yourself in the diverse culture of ancient Bukhara. This PWB School workshop is an adventure that promises to offer sights and scenery that you won't find anywhere else.

ITINERARY

Day 1 | May 7th

Tashkent
Arrive at any time.

Day 2 | May 8th

Tashkent/Samarkand
Travel on to Samarkand. Take an orientation walk and opt to visit the Amir Timur Mausoleum. Meals included: Breakfast

LESSON 1: ETHICS OF PHOTODOCUMENTARY & PHOTOVOICE

  • Ethics of Photodocumentary: We will discuss the ethics of being a documentary photographer through contemporary and historic examples. We will talk about permission/consent, editing, safety, journalistic integrity, responsibility, framing, narratives, your power/role as a photographer, and how photography can and has impacted social change. 
  • Learn about PhotoVoice, a technique that involves teaching others how to use photography to tell their stories. Throughout the workshop, various PhotoVoice activities will be demonstrated.
  • Project 1 is assigned.

Day 3 | May 9th

Samarkand
Enjoy a city tour and visit to the Registan. Opt to check out the Guri Amir Mausoleum, Tomb of the Prophet Daniel, and the Registan minarets. Use some free time to wander the bazaar or visit more sights.
Meals included: Breakfast

LESSON 2: ART OF STORYTELLING & POWER OF VOICE

  • Art of Storytelling: Through discussion, we will identify and unveil the elements and ingredients that make a powerful story. In your first storytelling assignment, you will get hands-on, guided practice in telling a story with your images.
  • Power of Voice: We will work on bringing your own narrative and emotions into your work.  Make your photos speak and say what you feel.  

Day 4 | May 10th

Samarkand/Aydar Kŭl Camp
Travel out into the desert to visit the Nurata Shrine and remains of the Alexander the Great fortress. Continue on for an evening in a local yurt camp. Opt to ride a camel or enjoy an evening Kazakh singing show. Exclusive Inclusions: Local Living Overnight in a Yurt
Meals included: Breakfast | Dinner

LESSON 3: PERFECT LANDSCAPES & ENVIRONMENTAL PORTRAITURE  

  • Participants will learn to take stunning landscape images with or without a tripod. We will also learn how to take beautiful "long exposures" of water and clouds to get a flowy, dreamy effect with or without the use of filters.
  • Through guided practice and a fun and challenging exercise, participants will learn how to bring portraiture to the next step.

Day 5 | May 11th

Aydar Kŭl Camp/Bukhara
Travel to Bukhara, one of the most charming cities in the country. Opt to visit the old city bazaars, have dinner with a local family, or visit a traditional hammam (bathhouse).

LESSON 4: PHOTOGRAPHY & SOCIAL CHANGE 

  • Through discussion and examples, we will encourage you to venture into social change and impact territory with your photography. 

Day 6 | May 12th

Bukhara
Take a half-day guided walk around the beautifully restored mosques, madrassas, and covered markets that make up the Old City.
Meals included: Breakfast

LESSON 5: COMPOSITION & EYE MOVEMENT

  • Learn how to storytell by the way you move your viewer throughout your frame.  Use of light, color, shapes, multi-level photojournalism will all be shown as ways to use a single image to tell more of a story and to trap the viewers eyes
  • Project 2 critique.
  • Project  3 is assigned.

Day 7 | May 13th

Bukhara/Khiva
Enjoy a full day's travel through the desert to reach UNESCO-listed Khiva. Get to know the place on a late afternoon walking tour.
Meals included: Breakfast

LESSON 6: EDITING & FINAL PHOTO ASSIGNMENT 

  • Time to put all the skills you have learned to the test in one last assignment! Throughout the evening you will have the chance to meet with your workshop instructor to have one-on-one feedback on your editing and selection process.

Day 8 | May 14th

Khiva/Tashkent
Enjoy a guided tour of the city with free time to experience the local life. Opt to browse the shops, wander the lanes, examine handmade silk rugs, or sit in a café in this ancient historical town. Later, take an overnight train to Tashkent, travelling alongside the locals.
Meals included: Breakfast

LESSON 7: SHARING AND PRESENTATION

  • Learn how to deliver an effective presentation and share the work you have created!

Day 9 | May 15th

Tashkent
Arrive back in Tashkent and enjoy a city tour or explore on your own with some free time.

Day 10 | May 16th

Tashkent
Depart at any time.
Meals included: Breakfast
