In the eastern outskirts of Delhi, a peculiar mountain dominates the landscape. However, this is no ordinary peak; it is the Ghazipur Dumping Yard, a colossal heap of discarded waste. As one approaches, the stench transforms into a stark realization of the environmental predicament facing the city.
This project delves into the multifaceted dynamics of Ghazipur, where informal employment thrives amidst heaps of garbage. Overwhelmingly, women and children outnumber men in the scavenger workforce, highlighting the social implications of waste management.
Yet, amidst the adversity, there is a glimmer of hope. Through successive visits since 2017, the project documents the transformation of Ghazipur from a symbol of environmental neglect to a site of progressive change. Initiatives like bio-mining and bioremediation have replaced traditional garbage-burning practices, with heavy machinery working tirelessly to segregate and recycle waste.
The narrative unfolds through a compelling photo series, showcasing the resilient spirit of those who make a living at Ghazipur. It captures the daily challenges faced by the scavengers, juxtaposed against the backdrop of the evolving landscape. The project also highlights the economic and environmental impact of the recycling initiatives, illustrating how discarded materials are being transformed into valuable resources.
Several tractors move up and down the garbage heap, continuously dumping waste on top.
As the once towering dumping yard gradually diminishes, the project envisions the rejuvenation of the area into a small ecological park. It explores the ambitious goals of the municipal body to beautify the surroundings and create a sustainable space for the community and general visitors alike.
Through this visual documentation, the project aims to spotlight the success of institutional and policy interventions, emphasizing how large-scale recycling projects can significantly contribute to the well-being of the community. It seeks to underline not only the employment opportunities provided but also the improvement in working conditions, ultimately portraying Ghazipur as a symbol of transformation and renewal in the face of environmental challenges.
